These days I'm older -- I'm in my 60's now, and my days of hiking long distances... "travel light/freeze at night" are long behind me. They ended a few years after I got out of the Marine Corps.
I'm lucky to hike a 20 miler in one weekend now. Most times it's only half that distance. I'm also well aware that in Bushcrafting the ideal thing is minimalist gear and cooking over an open camp fire. I still do plenty of that, but to be honest I like food. I'm no "foodie", but I'm a firm believer that if a man is warm , dry, and decently fed, he'll be in a much better position to make good decisions when he's out in the backwoods.
As of late, I've been using my sidecar motorcycles to get off the beaten path. Here in Maine it doesn't take much to get away from the trappings of civilization. And from my readings of the late outdoorsman Townsend Whelen, he used pack animals on a lot of his wilderness expeditions. Instead of me using 4 legged horses, I'm using my modern "Iron Horses" -- a 1998 Harley Davidson Electra Glide with a sidecar, and a 2007 URAL 750 with a sidecar and 2 WD.
