Putting Together a Foundry Furnace

This may seem to be an oversimplification, but I built a small wooden cart to roll around the furnace outside where I’d be casting my gun parts.

A furnace is only as good as the temperature you can run it at. I drilled a hole in the upper part of the chamber higher than the crucible sits so I could place a thermal probe to prevent it from burning up. So the temperature reading is actually lower slightly than in the immediate vicinity of the crucible.

A pyrometer is mounted in front separate plate away from the furnace to get a decent reading without interference from the heat. Unfortunately this pyrometer reads to 2,500*F. I’m still looking for an affordable one that reads above 3,000*F.

The furnace set up in the shop before she’s fired up for melting. Nothing is plugged in yet.

The foundry furnace set up on the cart so it can be moved around and stored as needed. Shown sitting next to a full tank of propane fuel for making runs of the parts.
