While I don’t have any children of my own, I do have a chance to interact with kids on occasion. So I ended up teaching my neighbors 11 year old how to drive my Russian URAL this afternoon. We took a ride in my Harley sidecar then switched to the Russian. Once he was comfortable enough in the sidecars, I put him on the seat and taught him the basics of driving it.
You hear the stories about “toxic masculinity” today and that’s the point. This world NEEDS men to teach boys how to become men. Our society has enough soft males in it already and that’s what is wrong with this world. So even though I don’t have kids of my own (they all died in infancy), what we need as a society is for someone to step up and teach the next generation. Teach them manners, teach them how to be tough, teach them what it is to be a good man. How to take their lumps and carry on, how to deal with adversity, how to be as fair as you can be. Teach them how to fix things when they break, teach them how to ride, how to hunt or fish.
The boy was afraid to ride on the back of his dad’s Harley, and to newbies, the sidecar hacks feel safer. But once they get used to this — they take to it like a duck to water. That’s his dad cheering him on in the background.
